Pivotal Life Sciences is a global healthcare investment platform backing companies developing medicines and biomedical technologies for substantial unmet medical needs. It combines the US Pivotal bioVenture Partners venture operation, a China venture-building operation and a public-equity strategy spanning company creation through listed biotechnology businesses. Its investment and operating teams work in San Francisco, the Boston area, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Pivotal also employs data science, machine learning and software specialists to support biotechnology investment research. Vincent Cheung chairs the platform; Peter Bisgaard and Rob Hopfner are managing directors. Nan Fung Life Sciences is a parent organization, rather than an interchangeable name for the US venture partnership or its individual funds. The platform was a named investor in Engrail Therapeutics' March 2024 Series B. The US venture partnership's second fund closed at USD389 million in December 2023; aggregate commitments to that partnership were USD689 million at the time. These partnership figures are distinct from the wider platform's reported assets under management.
