Rivus Batteries is the Gothenburg company Rivus AB, developing aqueous organic electrolytes for stationary flow batteries. Its chemistry stores energy using organic molecules, water and salts rather than critical-metal electrolytes such as vanadium, with the goal of supporting long-duration renewable-energy storage and more resilient supply chains. It designs the electrolytes to work with existing commercial flow-battery hardware and industrial chemical production, rather than requiring proprietary battery stacks. Its commercialization effort began in early 2023, following research at Chalmers, the University of Turku and the Technical University of Denmark. The company is advancing chemical scale-up, stack testing and customer pilots during 2026–2027; its 2028 large-scale deployment objective is a target. Lower costs, safety and performance advantages are company development claims, rather than independently proven outcomes of widespread commercial deployment.
