UroMems
Grenoble, France · Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
UroMems is a medical-device company founded in 2011 by biomedical engineer Hamid Lamraoui, urologist Pierre Mozer and medical robotics entrepreneur Stéphane Lavallée. Based in the Grenoble area of France with operations in Minneapolis, it develops implantable mechatronic systems for stress urinary incontinence. Its UroActive electronic artificial urinary sphincter combines embedded software, sensing, microtechnology and automated control to adapt urethral pressure to a patient’s activity. This is deep technology for urological function rather than a brain-computer interface. The system remains investigational: FDA investigational-device exemption and French ANSM clearance enabled the SOPHIA2 pivotal trial in 2025; these were trial permissions, not marketing authorizations. The company’s May 2026 announcement says the trial is ongoing across U.S. and French sites and the device is not available for sale in the U.S. or EU. The published leadership comprises three co-founders, nine board members, four board observers and three clinical advisers, with overlap among these groups. Documented financing includes a €12 million Series A in 2016, a €16 million equity-and-debt first Series B tranche in 2020 plus an additional €7 million in 2021, a €44 million Series C in 2024, and a $60 million strategic financing exclusively from Ajax Health Fund I in May 2026. HIL-INVENT is a verified investor in the 2020, 2021 and 2024 financings; it is separate from the EVER Pharma operating group.
