Syncona is a UK-based life science investment and company-building group founded by Wellcome in 2012. This profile represents the Syncona investment brand, distinguishing its Guernsey listed investment company Syncona Limited (registration 55514, formerly BACIT Limited, LSE: SYNC) from subsidiary Syncona Investment Management Limited (English company 10497864), its regulated alternative investment fund manager. The listed vehicle began business and trading on 26 October 2012; its 2016 transition acquired the original Syncona portfolio and adopted the Syncona name. Syncona funds and helps build biotechnology businesses, including gene and cell therapies, small-molecule drug discovery, neurological disease programmes and computational oncology. Current portfolio examples include Spur’s Parkinson’s disease gene therapy work, Beacon’s retinal gene therapies, Mosaic’s computational drug combinations and OMass’s molecular discovery platform. The September 2026 leadership changes made Chris Hollowood CEO and CIO, Samantha Roberts managing director, and Roel Bulthuis an executive partner. The separate listed-company board is chaired by Melanie Gee. Investments are held through corporate Syncona Holdings Limited; the capital pool is held in Syncona Investments LP Incorporated, whose sole limited partner is Syncona Limited. Permanent listed equity, sole-LP capital-pool assets and company investment commitments are distinguished from external multi-investor LP fund closes. Wellcome’s historical investment does not make it the buyer of every Syncona portfolio company.
