National Institutes of Health
Bethesda, Maryland, United States
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the United States federal biomedical research agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. Its origins trace to the 1887 Hygienic Laboratory; the agency later became the National Institutes of Health. NIH conducts and supports basic, clinical and translational research through its Office of the Director and its institutes and centers. Its mission includes understanding living systems, improving health and reducing illness and disability. Relevant work spans neuroscience, brain research, biotechnology, medical technologies, data science and artificial intelligence. The current official directorate names Jay Bhattacharya, Principal Deputy Director Matthew J. Memoli and deputy directors Nicole C. Kleinstreuer, Alfred C. Johnson, Jon R. Lorsch and acting intramural deputy Roland A. Owens, alongside published associate directors. Roles of NIH institute directors remain differentiated from the central agency directorate. NIDA is a component institute, rather than a second independent parent agency or private venture firm. NIH administers competitive research funding, including SBIR/STTR grants to eligible small businesses. Agency and programme budgets, requested appropriations and competitive award ceilings are distinct from actual recipient awards, private LP commitments and company equity financings. Actual NIDA-funded Flowly/Tamade LLC and Doro Mind projects belong to that identified funding institute; a duplicate parent NIH check is not inferred. Research aims and an award do not establish clinical efficacy or regulatory approval. This institutional investor identity supports source-qualified grant-provider records, not an assertion that NIH is a private investment manager.
