CIBC Innovation Banking
CIBC Innovation Banking is the technology, life-sciences and venture-financing banking unit and shared service brand of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and CIBC Bank USA. Launched in 2018 following CIBC’s acquisition of Wellington Financial assets, it serves early-stage, growth-stage and public companies and the venture investors supporting them across North America, the UK and Europe. It provides venture debt, growth financing, sponsor finance, fund finance, treasury services and strategic banking advice. Its healthcare practice supports medical devices, life sciences and healthcare technology; its technology practice includes AI and software businesses. The unit’s own current directory publishes 40 professionals, led by Paul McKinlay, with specialist leadership for venture banking, sponsor finance, portfolio and credit solutions, syndications, fund finance and UK/Europe. The firm directory category represents this financing unit, not a standalone private-equity partnership or separate incorporated bank. Actual contracting lenders must be verified per transaction: services may be supplied by CIBC or CIBC Bank USA, and the September2019 Aktana announcement identifies the unit but not the exact contracting bank. CIBC closed USD20M debt financing for AI life-sciences company Aktana in September2019. Bank balance-sheet funding, loan-book size, client counts, capital-call facilities, announced credit capacity and predecessor Wellington funds are not treated as new LP fund closes or assumed cash draws.
