Ed Boyden
Y. Eva Tan Professor in Neurotechnology at MIT, professor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Media Arts and Sciences, and Biological Engineering, and leader of the Synthetic Neurobiology Group. An investigator at the McGovern Institute, he develops tools to analyze and repair neural circuits. Co-invented optogenetic control of neurons and helped develop expansion microscopy and non-invasive brain stimulation methods. Earned his neuroscience PhD at Stanford. Co-founded the Mindspan Institute in 2026 to scale human brain analysis technologies.
