Restore Vision
Tokyo-based clinical-stage biotechnology company founded in 2016 that develops optogenetic gene therapies to restore vision lost through retinal degeneration. Its lead candidate RV-001 uses an AAV vector to deliver a gene encoding chimeric rhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein designed to make surviving retinal interneurons respond to light after photoreceptor loss. It is administered by intravitreal injection and is being evaluated in a Phase I/II trial for retinitis pigmentosa, with an approach intended to work across different causative genetic mutations. The technology originated in joint research at Keio University School of Medicine and Nagoya Institute of Technology. Restore Vision also develops additional retinal gene-therapy programs and manufacturing capabilities; its therapies remain investigational.
