Phagenesis is a commercial-stage medical-device company developing and selling neurostimulation technology for neurogenic dysphagia, a swallowing disorder associated with stroke and other neurological injury. Its Phagenyx system uses an external base station and a temporary catheter to deliver pharyngeal electrical stimulation to sensory nerves in the throat, aiming to support recovery of the brain pathways that coordinate swallowing. The catheter also supports liquid feeding. Treatment is delivered by trained clinicians at the bedside in inpatient facilities. In the United States, the published indication is as an adjunct to standard dysphagia care for patients with severe dysphagia after stroke. FDA granted the Phagenyx System de novo classification in September2022; this does not establish a broad approval for every cause of swallowing impairment. Phagenesis was co-founded in2007 by Conor Mulrooney and University of Manchester researcher Shaheen Hamdy.
